SUMMARY:Spring Sweep 2023
DESCRIPTION:Spring Sweep 2023\, part of the Great Lakes Cleanup\, is April 22\, 10am-12pm.  Go here to register! \nWant to do a clean up on your own\, too? Sign the Solo Sweep pledge today! We officially launched our digital data collection efforts by using the Clean Swell App which directly connects the information we collect here locally to the Ocean Conservancy’s largest marine debris database in the world\, TIDES. This allows our data to be instantly accessible and helps to support our work to address the root causes of litter pollution here locally and globally. Download the Clean Swell App and happy sweeping! \n\n\n\n\n \nOur Spring Sweep is part of the third annual Great Lakes CleanUP\, a collaborative trash removal event developed in partnership with 18 other groups and organizations around the Great Lakes basin. In WNY\, Spring Sweep volunteers throughout the Niagara River Watershed are working collectively with folks around the basin to stop thousands of pounds of litter from polluting our waterways. The Great Lakes is the drinking water resource for over 40 million people and we are excited to lead this region-wide stewardship event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCleanup pro tip: bring your own bucket to save on a trash bag and make data collection a breeze! \nTo learn more about our cleanup programs\, visit this page.

SUMMARY:Artist Alberto Rey hosts Show Featuring Niagara River
DESCRIPTION:The Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University will host an exhibit by artist Alberto Rey called Biological Regionalism: Niagara River\, Western New York. \nIt will be on display from April 20 until Feb. 25\, 2024. An artist’s reception is scheduled for Aprl 20 at 4:30 p.m. \nBiological Regionalism: Water of the Niagara River\, 2022. 42 x 72 inches. Niagara River water\, walnut ink\, oils\, acrylic\, marker\, pastels\, gouache\, and charcoal on Lanaquarelle paper on board. All works in the exhibition are courtesy of the artist. \nIn a statement on the museum’s website\, Rey state’s that “It is crucial to inform on the importance of our region in America’s cultural and natural heritage and the challenges that the Niagara River faces.” The show will explore the complexities of the Niagara River’s past and present. Rey seeks to share the cultural importance of the Niagara in American popular culture and how that has changed over time. These large-scale paintings reflect on the river’s historical significance to the Underground Railroad\, importance to Native American culture\, and the pollution of the river and the communities along its banks. \nRey’s Biological Regionalism continues his four-decade artistic journey “documenting human relationships to natural waterways and how these relationships have a direct effect on the flora and fauna of regions across the globe. Building on past\, present\, and future\, this work is guided through what he has termed\, ‘a devotional painting approach.'” \nThis exhibition is made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \nFor more information\, visit the museum’s website here. \n

SUMMARY:RestoreCorps Ellicott Creek Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nYou are invited to help us install over 100 plants at one of our restoration sites within Ellicott Creek Park on November 12th\, 2022. This event will conclude a multi-year effort to restore shoreline health and habitat within the park\, which will protect local waterways\, improve water quality\, and provide critical ecosystem services to wildlife. Learn more about our Living Shorelines Program by clicking here. \nSee the event details below and reserve your spot today! Thank you so much for your help and dedication to restoring our waterways. We look forward to seeing you out there! \nEllicott Creek Park:\nDATE: Saturday\, November 12th\nRAIN DATE: Saturday\, November 19th \nTIME: 11:30 am – 2:30 pm \nPlease arrive about 10 minutes early to allow enough time to park and sign-in prior to the start of the planting event. \nEvent Description: \nFor the past 4 years\, Waterkeeper has been leading a re-forestation effort in Ellicott Creek Park\, and with the help of our dedicated volunteers\, we have planted 100’s of trees and shrubs.  This upcoming volunteer event will be the final plating of the season and will also conclude our multi-year reforestation effort at Ellicott Creek Park. \nOur goal for this planting event is to transform a mowed area of shoreline into a more productive riparian habitat by planting 18 bare-root trees and 124 container shrubs.  We will begin with a brief planting demonstration before splitting into small groups to plant the trees.  After the trees are planted\, we’ll move on to planting the shrubs and then mulching and watering.  The planting area is in an area of the park that is currently being mowed\, so access should be easy for planting.  Please wear proper footwear for planting trees/shrubs and consider bringing a water bottle. \nMeeting location: \nVolunteers can park in the large gravel parking lot near the soccer fields or in the smaller pull-off parking areas along the park road. From there\, you can walk to the planting area\, which is located near Ellicott Creek.  Refer to the image below and the attached Google maps link for more details about the meeting location. SUMMARY:Scajaquada Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Do you and your friends crush it on trivia night? Put your skills to the test to save Scajaquada Creek! \nYou and your team will visit locations along Scajaquada\, racing against other teams to complete activities while exploring the Creek. You might be asked to take a selfie with the Lincoln statue overlooking the Japanese Gardens or go to the mouth of Scajaquada and pick up as much litter as you can in 60 seconds. \nYour team will have 2 hours to complete as many challenges as possible\, with the goal of scoring more points than the other teams. Additional points and prizes can be earned through fundraising leading up to the Hunt. The team with the most points at the end of the Hunt will win a prize pack loaded with gift certificates from local shops\, restaurants\, and attractions! \nBe sure to register soon – the first 100 registrants will be able to join Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper at the Post-Hunt Party at Buffalo Cider Hall! Registration coming soon.
