SUMMARY:Upper Wetland Goose Fence Installation
DESCRIPTION:Waterkeeper needs your help to install a goose fence around the perimeter of a recently completed wetland restoration project in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Volunteers will work in groups of two to install 3-foot tall fence posts with 3-pound hammers. Following post installation\, volunteers will work together to thread a thin rope through pre-drilled holes in the posts. \nClick below to learn more and sign up for this event. \nRegister for this Restore Corps Event\nHeavy Canada Goose presence has placed extreme pressure on the plant life in the project area\, making plant establishment nearly impossible. The geese are also contributing unhealthy amounts of phosphorus to this small water body through their droppings\, which if left unaddressed will eventually lead to impaired water quality and potentially Harmful Algal Blooms. \nRAIN DATE: In anticipation of inclement weather\, we’ve reserved a rain date of Saturday\, April 13th. 10am – 12pm. We will keep you updated as we get closer to the event date. If you have any questions please contact Brittni Anderson – Volunteer Coordinator at banderson@bnwaterkeeper.org \nARRIVAL / PARKING: Volunteers can enter through either of the Forest Lawn entrances off Main Street or Delaware Ave. There are several parking spaces adjacent to the project area and any spill over can park along the cemetery road. \nDelaware entrance is here \nMain Street entrance is here \nParking/meeting area is here

SUMMARY:Birds on the Niagara 2024
DESCRIPTION:Birds on Niagara will take place Feb. 16-19 along the Niagara River. There will be both indoor and outdoor events over the celebration. More information can be found on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/BirdsOnTheNiagara \nThis is North America’s only international bird festival promoting the intersections between birds\, conservation and social justice. \nThe Niagara River links Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and it’s located at the center of the Niagara River Globally Significant Important Bird and Biodiversity Area\, as well as the Niagara River Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance. Both of these conservation areas extend into Lakes Erie and Ontario. \nWinter birds include birds migrating from the Arctic and the boreal forests of the Northwest and the Northeast.  These include Snowy Owl\, many species of waterfowl including ducks\, swans\, and geese\, large populations of typical regional winter birds\, and in some winters irruptive species from the north such as finches. This is a good opportunity to see these birds. \nUpdates at www.birdniagara.org.

SUMMARY:Planting Event for Hyde Park
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting a planting at Hyde Park in Niagara Falls on Oct. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are sought for this event\, and those interested can click the button below to learn more and register for the event. \nThe plan is to install “rock-socks” along the waterway. These items contain plants that help us in our living shoreline restoration work and will keep Hyde Park Lake healthy and stable. The rocks-socks are pictured below. \n \nRock-socks are a novel wetland planting technique developed during the Buffalo River restoration. It involves filling biodegradable burlap bags with a special planting substrate and planting them with wetland plugs in a nursery setting. These plants are left to grow in the nursery for several weeks\, developing dense root systems\, before they are installed in shallow water areas at restoration sites. \nBuffalo Niagara Waterkeeper has worked with the Friends of Silo City to grow these rock-socks and we are ready to install them in the landscape. During the event\, we will separate into groups of (3) Wheelbarrow Loaders\, (3) Wheelbarrow Runners\, (3) Rock Sock Handoff Folks\, and (3) In-water Installers. Rock-socks can simply be placed in shallow water areas\, so the only tools/gear needed to complete these plantings include wheelbarrows for transporting the plants and waders for installing them in shallow water areas. \nThese supplies will be provided by BN Waterkeeper\, but if you have your own pair of waders\, feel free to bring them. \nVolunteers should be able to bend and walk on uneven surfaces and should be prepared to get a little wet during the day’s activities. The Rock Socks weigh between 35 and 50lbs\, and we are anticipating each volunteer will be able to move between 15 and 20 rock socks during this volunteer event. \nThe Hyde Park Restoration project is located in Niagara Falls\, New York near the Rose Garden. Please consider arriving 15 minutes early in order to find parking and locate our group! Volunteers can park at  3200 Pine Ave. Niagara Falls NY\, 14301. \nIf you have any difficulties with the registration\, please reach out to Brittni Anderson (banderson@bnwaterkeeper.org). \nRegister Here
