SUMMARY:Ellicott Creek Park Tree Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper needs your help replacing tree protectors/shelters. Click the Join button on this page to sign up for this event. \nDuring this two-and-a-half-hour event\, volunteers will replace approximately 100 tree shelters on trees previously planted by BNW staff and volunteers. \nWorking in teams of 2-3\, participants will use pruners and zip ties to install either tree tubes or tree cages around trees in the park. Over time\, trees outgrow the shelters they were installed with and require updated protection. \nThese shelters will protect the trees from damage caused by deer\, lawn mowers\, weed whackers\, and human activity as they continue to grow. When installed correctly\, these shelters can protect trees for multiple years. \nLearn more and register here

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Literacy’s 2025 Great Lakes BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:Students\, families\, and colleagues are invited to celebrate Earth Day with the Center for Great Lakes Literacy’s annual Great Lakes BioBlitz. \nThis free event is an opportunity to engage youth and the public in community science\, collect data to support biodiversity research and conservation\, and learn more about the organisms in the Great Lakes Basin. Anyone in a U.S. State or Canadian province that has land within the Great Lakes region is welcome to participate. \nWhat is the Great Lakes BioBlitz?\nA BioBlitz is an event to observe\, identify\, and record as many different\, non-domesticated species as possible along the Great Lakes coastline during a specified period of time. \nWhen is the Great Lakes BioBlitz?\nThe BioBlitz begins on Earth Day\, April 22 and it runs for 4 weeks\, ending on May 19. \nHow do I participate in the Great Lakes BioBlitz?\nThe beauty of this project is that you decide your level of participation. Take an afternoon to explore and document some plants or wildlife in an area\, or pick a location to return to weekly\, or set a goal to find something new every day – there are many ways to participate. \nIf you take multiple images of the same individual organism\, at the same time\, in the same place\, please post the images as a group (a single observation within iNaturalist).   \nIf you take multiple images of the same organism at different times or places\, please post the images as different observations within iNaturalist. \nIn other words\, an observation should include date\, time\, location\, and organism identity (to the best of your ability). \nYou may participate as an individual\, a family\, a class\, or other group.  \n\nVisit iNaturalist or download the app onto your phone and create an account.\nVisit and become a member of the 2025 Great Lakes BioBlitz project\nGet outside\, get out your cameras\, and start making and posting observations! As you are able\, verify other participants’ Great Lakes BioBlitz Project postings.\n\nWant to learn more about the Great Lake BioBlitz?\nVisit the Great Lakes BioBlitz Educator Site for more information about the project and educator resources for engaging youth in this wonderful learning experience! \nWhy participate?\nThere are many benefits of becoming a BioBlitz wizard\, here are just a few: \n\nEngage in an outdoor activity\, discover the wild living things in the world around you\, form and strengthen a place-based connection\nJoin a global community of observers\, learners\, and scientists passionate about biodiversity and the Great Lakes\nContribute to a global database of organisms. Observations made on iNaturalists contribute to research\, conservation\, and educational outreach programs.\n\n  \nLearn More

SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Waste 2025
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Zero Waste\, facilitated jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat)\, highlights the importance of bolstering waste management globally and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns to address the waste pollution crisis. \n\nEvery year\, humanity generates between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste. Without urgent action\, the annual waste generation will hit 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. \nLearn More Here\n\n\nWaste pollution threatens human health\, costs the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars every year\, and aggravates the triple planetary crisis: the crisis of climate change\, the crisis of nature\, land and biodiversity loss\, and the crisis of pollution and waste. \n\n\nThis year’s theme\, Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles\, focuses on the urgent need to take action to reduce the waste impact from the fashion and textile sector and promote sustainability and circularity. \nBuffalo Niagara Waterkeeper continues to promote cleanup efforts around Western New York and the Great Lakes basin. You can join our Spring Sweep 2025 to be a part of the solution. \nClick Here For Our Spring Sweep
