SUMMARY:Buffalo River Stewardship Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper for a fall stewardship event along the Buffalo River\, close to Red Jacket Natural Habitat Park. This is Saturday\, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. \nRegister Here\nThere are several needs for this volunteer effort. These include: \n\nRaking and woody debris clearing\nSeeding and strawing\nLitter Pick-up\n\nThe Buffalo River restoration effort includes treatment of the invasive plant knotweed that does not provide food for local wildlife. To replace the knotweed that was treated and is not covering the ground with dead leaves and stems\, we need volunteers to expose the soil so we can then place native seed mix on those bare patches. This task will consist of raking knotweed stems and leaves in densely covered areas and removing trash in dense areas. \nLearn more and sign up at the link below. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Jayne Park Tree & Shrub Planting
DESCRIPTION:Waterkeeper needs your help revitalizing a riparian area along the Niagara River in Jayne Park on Cayuga Island. Our goal is to transform a large area of mowed lawn into a riparian habitat by creating a no-mow zone and installing nearly 200 native trees and shrubs along the shoreline. \nTrees and shrubs are critical components of a healthy shoreline ecosystem. They provide essential habitat\, resist erosion\, and improve water quality. All these ecological services are incredibly important for the health of the Niagara River and the surrounding community. \nVolunteers are asked to bring their own water bottles and site-appropriate boots for outdoor work. Waterkeeper will have all the tools needed for planting. \nClick below to register and for more information. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Buffalo Arts Studio Oct. 25 Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Arts Studio\, in partnership with area environmental activist organizations\, will present the panel discussion\, “New Polluters” featuring artists\, academics\, and grassroots activists discussing the environmental impact of cloud computing and crypto- mining on our community. \nThe panel discussion is Oct. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. It will be at Buffalo Arts Studio Tri-Main Center. \nThe panel will include exhibiting artists Joan Linder and Stephanie Rothenberg as well as North Tonawanda residents who successfully won a two-year moratorium on new operations or the expansion of existing “data center.” Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper’s Elizabeth Cute will also be one of the people on the panel. \nThe “data center” moratorium can include: “facilities housing multiple banks of computers within a building\, modular facilities containing processors in multiple storage-like containers\, server clusters and other operations related to cryptocurrency mining\, blockchain authenticating\, Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) processing\, general data computing\, processing and storage\, and other large-scale electronic-based centers of the like.” \nThis is all part of the Waterfront View series by Buffalo Arts Studio to feature exhibitions\, workshops\, and panel conversations that examine how late-stage capitalism has shifted the view of water and waterways from a resource of collective benefit to a commodity of individual interest and shareholder profit. Waterfront View supports the creation of new work that critically addresses contemporary issues surrounding economic and environmental justice and reflects the belief that artists and curators can effect change through collaborations that balance community need with artistic insight. All programs are curated with the intent to spur dialogue between varied audiences while working toward social\, economic\, and environmental justice.

SUMMARY:Solo Sweep Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Throughout September complete a Solo Sweep within the Scajaquada Creek Watershed to help Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper restore and revitalize the creek. Along with collecting data and cleaning the watershed\, you will also be entered to win prizes! \nA Solo Sweep is a cleanup effort by an individual (or small group) that is completed on their own without the coordination of Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper. These Solo Sweeps can take place anywhere\, anytime\, and people can track litter collected during the Solo Sweep by using the Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell app. \nA Solo Sweeper is a dedicated volunteer who has pledged to remove litter in their community to prevent pollutants from entering local waterways. \nRegistrants who complete one Solo Sweep are entered in a drawing to win a pair of Freshwater Flicks tickets – a series of short films from across the world produced by the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. This event is hosted by Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper and will be in late winter 2025. \nAlso\, the registrant who records the most items in Clean Swell during the month of September will win a pair of tickets to Freshwater Flicks along with a gift card to a local restaurant in the Scajaquada Creek Watershed. \nRegister and Learn More Here\n \n
