SUMMARY:Maritime Center Canoe Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 19 the Buffalo Maritime Center will have an open house and the opening of its first exhibit in the 90 Arthur St. museum: Water & Wood: Canoes in New York State. \nA Buffalo Maritime Center member exhibit preview will be on Thursday\, May 18th\, 6 to 8 p.m. If you are interested in becoming a member\, click here https://buffalomaritimecenter.org/join/ \nThe exhibit details the evolution of what has become the most common boat type in the world. It traces the canoe from the early watercraft of North America through a transition to recreational paddling to what is one of the most accessible watercraft today. As you explore\, you will see the evolution of canoeing in New York State and the Northeast. Many cultures used their unique tools and resources to fill their need for small multi-use watercraft. The different approaches to these canoes exemplify the role the boats would fill and the materials\, knowledge\, and inspiration available to the builders.

SUMMARY:Solo Sweep Workshop at Seneca Bluffs
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Seneca Bluffs to learn how pledging to do Solo Sweeps can reduce plastic pollution and work towards eventually eliminating litter from being a source of microplastics. On May 21 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m\, we’ll meet at the park to talk about the Solo Sweep program\, hand out Solo Sweep kits\, and lead a hands on workshop. If you want to know more before the event\, check out: https://bnwaterkeeper.org/solo-sweep/\n\nLitter and plastic pollution is one of the leading on-going pollution sources to the Buffalo River. In 2015\, a study conducted by United States Geological Survey found that out of 29 Great Lakes rivers the Buffalo River had the third highest concentration of microplastic in its waters.\n\nThis means that the fish that swim the Buffalo River have a higher risk of consuming/eating/breathing in plastic\, that Lake Erie\, our source of drinking water\, is being polluted by plastic coming from the Buffalo River\, and the water you swim in at Beaver Island State Park is down stream of a source of plastic pollution.\n\nBut you can act and change this story.
