We continue, alongside our volunteers, to advance the story of the Buffalo River so the water and shorelines are restored and protected to better serve the communities it flows past.

Around 40 volunteers joined us for a stewardship event by Red Jacket Park, part of the Erie County park system, on Nov. 16. Volunteers cleaned up trash, raked away dead invasive species and placed native seed down for future growth.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Buffalo River stewardship event by Red Jacket Park, November 2024.

The Buffalo River restoration effort includes treatment of the invasive plant knotweed, which does not provide food for local wildlife. The plan for this event was to rake up the dead leaves and stems, as well as trash on site.

Once leaves and trash were removed, volunteers carefully spread seed throughout the 5+ acres of land to begin establishing native plants. Straw was placed over the seed to protect it.

While we have a great volunteer base that gives time for these events, we need the help from our donors and funders so we can continue this type of work. Planning an event like the stewardship near the Buffalo River and Red Jacket Park consumes many staff hours and resources.
We love the work and Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will continue to protect and restore our shorelines, and donations from our supporters will allow us to make sure we can continue our mission. Please donate today.
