Buffalo River Habitat Restoration Project
Buffalo River Habitat Restoration Projects received the Erie County Environmental Excellence Award for Buffalo Motor Generator Corporation, Ohio Street Boat Launch, Toe of Katherine Street Peninsula, Blue Tower Turning Basin, Buffalo Color Peninsula, Riverbend I & II and Old Bailey Woods.
Funding for these projects was provided by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through a Regional Partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Great Lakes Commission.
These projects restored and enhanced nearly two miles of shoreline and 20 acres of habitat along the Buffalo River, setting the stage for the river’s removal from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.
Located across from Buffalo RiverWorks on the property owned by Buffalo Motor and Generator, this project included upland and shoreline restoration designed to structurally protect and diversify riparian vegetation, as well as in-water features to provide habitat and hiding spots for aquatic life.
This 2.3 acre site was dominated by invasive plants and faced significant shoreline erosion. Restoration activities at the site included treatment of invasive plants, establishment of native vegetation, shoreline stabilization, and nesting beaches for spiny softshell turtles.
This 1,632 linear foot project site is entirely in-water. Restoration activities included the addition of vertical pilings and log booms to prevent debris build up and rootwad chain to prevent erosion. Both the rootwad chain and log booms will allow for the establishment of native aquatic vegetation.
Comprised of two phases totaling 4,320 linear feet and 9.79 acres of shoreline area located at RiverBend Commerce Park property within the City of Buffalo, Erie County, NY.
Almost 2,600 linear feet of shoreline was stabilized and received improvements along the Buffalo Color Peninsula.
Provided 805 linear feet of shoreline habitat and 3.1 acres of riparian buffer habitat restoration and enhancements.
Restored over 300 feet of shoreline and create 1.25 acres of upland habitat while enhancing public use of this NYSDEC maintained site.
